“What is truth?” is one of the oldest and most important questions ever asked. Throughout history, people have searched for answers about life, purpose, morality and destiny. Today, many believe that truth is subjective and that each person can determine their own truth. Others believe that truth is universal, unchanging and applies to everyone. Who is right?
In everyday life, we recognise that certain truths are undeniable regardless of culture, education or religious belief. If you don’t look both ways at a crossing, the truth is you run the risk of getting hit by a car. If you don’t eat, the truth is you will eventually starve. These realities remain true whether we acknowledge them or not.
If there is truth, then all are subject to it. Some truths are self-evident from nature and experience, but what about those bigger questions we ask that are not as obvious?
“Where do we come from?”
“Why are we here?”
“Why is there pain and suffering in this world?”
“What happens when we die?”
People have offered many different answers to these questions. But can they all be correct?
If truth is real, then it can be discovered. But where can we find these ultimate truths? Was Pilot asking the right source when he asked Jesus “What is truth?” (John 18:38).
The Bible presents God as the ultimate source of truth. The Bible teaches that God consists of three divine entities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each of these members of the Godhead is identified with truth. The Scriptures refer to the Father as “the God of truth” (Isaiah 65:16). Jesus, the Son of God, refers to Himself as “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6). Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as “The Spirit of Truth” (John 16:13).
Because God does not change (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8), His truth does not change. It is not based on popular opinion, cultural trends, or personal preference. Truth is reliable because it is grounded in God’s unchanging character.
The Bible also teaches that God’s Word is truth (John 17:17). Through Scripture, God reveals who He is, why humanity exists, what has gone wrong in the world, and how He provides hope and salvation through Jesus Christ. The Bible claims to offer answers not only for eternity but also for daily life.
This course is designed to help you examine these claims for yourself. Over the next sixteen lessons, we will explore evidence for God’s existence, the reliability of the Bible, God’s plan for humanity, and the message of Jesus Christ. You will be encouraged to think carefully, ask questions, and compare what you learn with the Bible itself.
