"What is Truth?"
This question has been asked throughout all of history. Yet, even with all our knowledge and advancements in technology, everyone seems to have a different answer. Many say that one can have their “own truth,” completely different from another’s and still both be right. Others believe in one universal truth that applies to all people of every age. Who is right? Can we ever truly know the answer? Are we more enlightened because we believe that the truth can be subjective?
Truth is traditionally defined as “the body of real things, events and facts.” The traditional definition asserts that truth is the classification of what is objectively knowable. If you don’t look both ways at a crossing, the truth is you run the risk of getting hit by a car. If you don’t eat, the truth is you will begin to starve. It does not matter where you are from, how educated you are, what religion or belief about the world you hold to; these are fundamental, undeniable facts we all live our lives by.
If there is truth, then all are subject to it. Some truths are self-evident from nature and experience, but what about those bigger questions we ask that are not as obvious?
“Where do we come from?”
“Why are we here?”
“Why is there pain and suffering in this world?”
Where can we find these ultimate truths? Was Pilot asking the right source when he asked Jesus “What is truth?”
